D3.1 Preparation and characterization of coatings - EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This deliverable describes the coatings required for the HELIX project, consisting of zinc flake systems and reference coating, i.e. hot dip galvanized samples. Several preliminary tests were performed to find the optimal process parameters for the coating process. In these preliminary tests, the influence of curing conditions, coating thicknesses and the type of coating on hydrogen formation and hydrogen absorption into the steel was investigated. Furthermore, the friction coefficients (K-factor) of the zinc flake coating were measured for several zinc flake systems. The applied coating thickness, coating uniformity and distribution of the metallic components were assessed by optical light microscopy and a scanning electron microscopy.
